Cos’è un “postmortem” nei videogiochi?
Il postmortem è un’analisi fatta dal team di sviluppo sul processo di realizzazione di un loro videogioco, in cui vengono messi in risalto gli elementi positivi e negativi, legati al caso, a elementi esterni o a errori interni. Tali analisi vengono effettuate dopo l’uscita del gioco e tendono a coprire il periodo che va dall’ideazione del concept al primo periodo sul mercato. Il loro scopo è quello di fornire esempi di buone pratiche (e di criticità da evitare) alla comunità degli sviluppatori.
Buona parte dei postmortem segue uno schema standardizzato, in cui vengono indicati, dopo una breve presentazione generale, cinque «what went right» e cinque «what went wrong» seguendo lo schema che veniva utilizzato sulla rivista «Game Developer Magazine», ma in alcuni casi possono presentarsi con varianti significative.
Perché fare un elenco di postmortem?
Perché talvolta sono dei contenuti molto utili. Possono esserlo per gli sviluppatori, in primo luogo, che hanno modo di leggere cosa hanno fatto di giusto (e di sbagliato) altre persone che prima di loro si sono cimentate con determinate tipologie di prodotto in determinati mercati. Ma possono anche essere molto utili per accademici e ricercatori, in quanto costituiscono delle fonti interessanti, che mettono spesso in risalto degli aspetti che dall’esterno sono trascurati o non conoscibili. Ovviamente andranno soppesati, tenendo anche solo conto – banalmente – che può valere anche il principio opposto: talvolta serve distacco per rendersi conto di determinate cose.
Ecco perché, dopo aver terminato la bibliografia completa dei saggi in italiano sui videogiochi (potete consultarla qui) ho deciso di recuperare la raccolta di postmortem che avevo fatto in passato, di completarla e di condividerla.
La seguente lista di postmortem non è stata compilata automaticamente, è il frutto di un lavoro manuale. Questo implica una selezione dei contenuti. Per sua stessa natura è una soluzione perfettibile e in alcuni casi potenzialmente criticabile, ma ha portato all’esclusione di determinati contenuti per alcune ragioni precise. Il caso forse più evidente è quello di Itch.io, in cui molti contenuti che presentano l’etichetta “postmortem” sono in realtà tutt’altro (aggiornamenti sulle patch, per esempio).
Sono anche stati generalmente esclusi i “postmortem” di soggetti che non hanno lavorato allo sviluppo del videogioco di cui parlano. Capita, talvolta, con i giornalisti. Nonostante questo, ci sono casi in cui una intervista va a fondare quello che è sostanzialmente un postmortem, e in tal caso può essere conteggiata. Ho anche tendenzialmente escluso i postmortem che non si occupano di videogiochi ma che si focalizzano sulla storia di un team, sull’andamento di una game jam, sulla partecipazione a una fiera o cose del genere.
Come vedrete, molti postmortem provengono dalle stesse fonti: il sito Game Developer (ex Gamasutra), da YouTube (in larga parte dal canale della GDC) e da Itch.io, ma ce ne sono anche diversi altri che non sono lì presenti, e che sono invece trattati nelle tesi di laurea, sui blog degli sviluppatori ecc. Anche per questo è sembrato utile questo lavoro di catalogazione.
